HEY, BADGE SNOBS... LOOK AWAY

Intended as competition for small, practical, urban utility vehicles like the Toyota Matrix amongst others, Kia's Soul at least appears to be a winner.  With a degree of Skoda Roomster funk and a smidgen of Nissan Cube func...tionality, Kia has found its design message with the Soul.

Let's hope they stick with it.  As one of the fastest growing automakers, there's no way Kia should be forced into major discounting as evidenced by Friday's story.  The Cee'd and Borrego don't share the same level of chic, but one must admit: we're a long way from the original Sephia.

Pictured below are the three tunerized versions of the Soul that Kia debuted at the Geneva show.  The likely production design is seen above.

CAMERA EDUCATION - RED LIGHTS

It's a cause near and dear to my heart.  No, no, no - I don't enjoy running red lights.  I attempt the 'stop if you can do so safely' practice when the yellow/amber lights up. However, there has always been a lot more to the case against red light cameras than the simple theory of governmental financial windfalls.

Red light cameras (and radar cameras, too) have been considered unsafe for quite some time.  Follow the link for greater enlightenment.

KIA CANADA PRICE DROPS

Sitting at a kitchen table in Prince Edward Island, far from home, I notice a newspaper insert with shockingly low numbers.  Granted, this is a combination of at least two concurrent events; one being the rise of the Canadian dollar, the other being models that are at or near the end of their life cycle or lacking a large degree of desirability.  Or both.  Which would then be three concurrent events, wouldn't it?  Yes.

Kia is advertising cash purchase prices of $9,995; $14,995; $15,495; $18,245; $18,445; $20,645; $26,995; $29,495 and $32,195 for the Rio; Spectra; Spectra5; Rondo; Sportage; Magentis, Sedona; Sorento; and Amanti. Yes again, these are base prices and are only on offer until the last day of March.  Indeed, the fine print is hefty. But these prices are sometimes many thousands of dollars lower than the MSRP listed on Kia.ca.

That, in and of itself, is news.

PONTIAC/BUICK RECALL

207,542 supercharged Buicks and Pontiacs are facing a recall.  The Regal and Grand Prix could face problems with oil leaks -> manifold -> spark plugs -> flames.  In fact, General Motors suggests that because of the fire potential in these cars (1997-2003), you ought not park inside carports or garages.

In other words, this is a serious one, especially contrasted with many of the notices you see in GoodCarBadCar's Recall.

BMW TINKERS

By the end of 2008, BMW will relieve 8,100 workers of their jobs.  More than half of them are part-timers; another 2,500 are full-time workers in Germany where BMW employs 75% of its workers and sells 20% of its product.  600 overseas jobs will be cut, but at the same time as all of these cutbacks (the first job cuts since the turn of the century for BMW), the builder of the Ultimate Driving Machines plans to hire 500 skilled workers.

BMW has more than 100,000 employees worldwide and sold 1.5million vehicles last year.  Along with the 1-series, 3-series, 5-series, 6-series, 7-series, Z4 roadster and coupe, X3, X5, Mini, and Rolls-Royce; BMW will soon begin building the X6 in North Carolina. With a substantial portion of its sport-activity vehicles being sold in the USA, it has always seemed obvious - at least in a financial and logistical sense - that BMW would build its first SAV, the X5, in Spartanburg.  Now, BMW is taking Z4 production back home to Europe and moving the X3 to America, as well.

In order for the Spartanburg plant to be fit and ready for a three-pronged approach to sport-ute building, BMW is investing $750,000,00 in readying the plant to build all the X models for all world markets. Production should hit 240,000 by 2012.

THE MAKING OF A CAR AD - NISSAN QASHQAI

After watching this clip, you'll have a greater appreciation for a high-quality car advert.  No, not the kind with Maxime Talbot doing a funny dance (as seen here), but the kind you can find at The Guardian by following this link.

UK television watchers have the benefit of viewing impressive advertisements, like the finished version at the link above. The clip below takes a brief look at how Nissan developed that "Urban Proof" Qashqai commercial. Creativity has not yet climaxed in regions where some legislation forbids extreme driving maneuvers or high speeds in advertising.  Keep in mind, the Qashqai is basically a Rogue - but the Rogue received some tacky in-show plug by a girl on Heroes.

It's also interesting to see the different ways a vehicle is positioned in wildly different markets.  The Rogue is listed amongst "Crossovers/SUVs" on the NissanUSA.com website. When it comes to the Qashqai and Nissan.co.uk, "Passenger" is the category, rather than 4x4.

AUTO ADVERTISING RHETORIC

Define it as you please, or as the dictionary attempts to: rhetoric is an integral part of advertising, especially the automotive kind. Why?  Automobiles are an emotional purchase.  We aren't talking toasters inside the front cover of Good Housekeeping, here.  Some choice examples from MotorTrend April can be found below. Speaking of bad advertising, the Pittsburgh Penguins (most favourite team of mine) players in this YouTube clip are current Thrashers forward Colby Armstrong, Max Talbot, Sergei Gonchar, and Evgeni Malkin.

"Speed records need witnesses.  Thus, the four doors."  So says BMW regarding their iconic M3, shown here in a 4-door configuration. Catchy little phrase, isn't it?  Considering that BMW governs the speeds of its cars to 155 mph, speed records aren't in your future.

"Rethink. Green is good.  Saturn accelerates toward hybrid leadership."  General Motors might want to keep about planting the foot on the Saturn throttle a bit more heavily if that 'acceleration' ever wants to reach the 'leadership'.

"Tested positive for performance enhancement.  Admitted nothing."  Famed Mustang tuner Saleen advertises its S Series, with what they say is 460-620 horsepower.  Unfortunately, a few pages later, MotorTrend tests a Saleen S281-3V.  Dyno testing shows the Saleen is down on its power ratings and is only 0.2 seconds quicker than a stock Ford Mustang GT.  A stock GT that costs $15K less.

"All coupes are not created equal."  Oh so true.  For Nissan, the Altima Coupe is decidedly below equal.  See The Good Car Guy's Confessions from earlier today.

"And CAR is what makes a Pontiac a Pontiac."  Uh, thanks for clearing that up, Poncho.  I really would've phrased it a different way.  Maybe "Pontiac makes a Pontiac that is a CAR."  I dunno.

"Why can't big be smart? Just something to rethink about."  As I keep finding more and more of these Saturn ads that encourage me to think about things for at least the second time (8 passengers and24mpg, for instance), I've started thinking about those disenfranchised Saturn ad viewers.  What about all those people who are going to think about it for the first time?  They might just feel awfully stupid for never having thought of it before.  Poor folks.

"Great looks and it cooks too."  It appears as though Ford believes the Fusion is a looker.  Questionable theory.  Secondly, the 'cooking' may refer to the Fusion's optional 221-hp V6 engine.  Optional V6 engines in today's midsize sedans are supposed to make a LOT more power.  If the Fusion cooks, the Accord and Camry must possess industrial-sized BBQs.
